David & David, “Welcome to the Boomtown”

David & David are a weird rock footnote. Boomtown was their only album, and it’s a hell of a record. This song was the first single and album opener, and man, it grabs you. The siren-line guitar riff that kicks things off sets the tone for a series of vignettes about people who are varying degrees of down and out in L.A. It’s alternately moody and rocking, and preps you for more stories of sadness, seediness, and desperation.

If you’re wondering what happened to the two Davids: they were a part of Sheryl Crow’s Tuesday Night Music club that resulted in her debut album of the same name. David Baerwald also released a couple of solo records and contributed “Come What May” to Moulin Rouge; his first novel, The Fire Agent, should be released sometime this year. David Ricketts moved on to mainly producing records.
