Given the lyrics, it’s hard to call this song subversive, because Lennon slaps you in the face with his thesis in the first line, and then sings, “I’ll say it again.” But that piano lick by Billy Preston! You’ve just entered the Church of Self, the hardest place to be a believer. Which is why it’s so powerful when the music and slapback echo drop out, and it’s just Lennon singing, “I just believe in me.”
